Indonesia and Malaysia: Building New Partnerships in Asia

CNP President Scott Bates and Senate Foreign Relations Committee Staff Member Atman Trivedi held an off-the-record roundtable discussion where Mr. Trivedi highlighted the findings from his recent staff trip to Indonesia and Malaysia. As the only ASEAN member of G-20, Indonesia has assumed a leadership role in the region along with a fast growing market presence. Despite its budding prospects, U.S. trade and investment with Indonesia has been underwhelming compared to the high share of U.S. investment in Malaysia. Mr. Trivedi examined the future of strategic partnerships in Southeast Asia, illustrating the opportunities for trade, counter-terrorism, and defense cooperation.
